Traces
In this section,I firstly choose a close object of observation, chair downstairs.
From daytime to night, I recorded the light changes through the sun and clouds passing by.
By choosing an immobile object as a reference, everything else becomes a trace of what once existed on it.
Sketching
Firstly I use marks to quickly sketch the photo, and it's quite interesting to see those special watermark made by them. So I decided to keep them.
Etching printing
I remade this photo on zinc plate and used sugar lift at first. It does gives a beautiful and fluency watery texture. However it wasn't clear enough. So I made it again after adding double aquatint effect.
And for the very soft touches on this photo, are made by one layer of sbit bite, by covering empty areas with asphalt and then draw on acid directly. By controlling the time of it stains on, I changed the depth of colour to have clear layers.
This picture is what I tried to having a softly blooming colour from center of a whole work. Like it is luminous.Green does a great mix with black background, however it is too eye-catching, making the theme of the work is not able to be seeked. It making me feel some story is strongly happening here.
I added another layer of aqutint and printed it dark. Details have gone, feels like a visual nightmare. Don't like it very much.
I Spend another two weeks on this plate to see is there anyway to deeper the image. So I add hard ground to draw fine lines, to give image more detail and pin primary object out.
And so on I found when I am adding one more layers, the traces of the old layers are disappraring at the same time, they become a bckground that continue to blur and disspate.
As the work I done in section 1, I also added chine-colle once on the print, in order to have an attention on the main objects which are two chairs.
I love the way it stands out.
Other Practices
These fifteen small elements are an experiment about traces I did.
To define my project, I cut a lot tiny square papers and put on a table rolled with red paint one by one. Every time when a small paper is put on, I cover them with one new rectangle paper, and so on repeated 14 more times until the red color is used up.
This experiment is to artificially creat 'process' and record the traces to observe the visual process.
In addition, I spend one day sitting in a cafe, to quickly sketch differenyt people and groups around me, to catch a their movements and emotion in abstract drawings. The sketches are not easy to recognize, so I named every one once after I finishing drawing.
