Unit 3
Artist statement
The key subject of my work is to explore societal isolation and the invisible boundaries that separate different social groups. I aim to visualize this theme by constructing illusionary geometric spaces and using clay models symbolizing generalized human figures, thereby evoking about the invisible social divisions in our surroundings, inspiring a collective consciousness.
Inspired by the complexity of social structures, I use simulated spaces to express my observations on social divisions. In my series work Crowds, Us, I utilize the physical edge-press created by printmaking process to narrate the invisible boundaries, reflects my thoughts on unconscious group separations in urban life. I express the broader society as a whole through the use of blank spaces in my work, representing a sense of openness and unfinished meaning. In displaying these pieces, I aim to create a holistic reflection of this concept within the flow of space..
While my artistic form and emotional tone have similarities with existentialist themes, particularly feelings of loneliness and alienation, my focus differs. Unlike existential art, which centers on personal struggle, my work examines the phenomenon of isolation from a societal perspective, focusing on how social structures shape the alienation between individuals. My works emphasize a single element to reveal its relationship with a larger environment, highlighting the individual's nuanced position within a broader social framework. I aim not only to reflect a state of isolation but also to uncover the collective impact of this subtle separation. Resonance with both personal and collective levels.
